Days 144 - 149 Ridgecrest - Las Vegas - Page - Flagstaff

Early start in Ridgecrest gave me a lot of time to see Death Valley. The place has it's name for a reason. At this time of year the temperature there is actually quite nice between 15 to 20 Celsius which is almost perfect for me. But in the summer the temperature can easily reach figures of 50 Celsius and every summer someone dies there for dehydration. They say you should drink one litre every hour. The sceneries were amazing. That huge emptiness was unbelievable. And the longest straight road I saw was about 35km.

After exiting Death Valley I spotted Area 51 cafe. Apparently the real Area 51 with all the aliens and ufos was somewhere near. I ate and fueled up there and got going before they captured me as an alien on the loose. By the way. Fuel in California was about 3,35$/gallon. In Nevada it was easily 2,70$/gallon. In comparison fuel in Finland is about 6,50$/gallon. No wonder Americans like big cars and big engines.

Finally I reached Las Vegas. Probably the most artificial place in the world. They say The Strip is the most lit place in the world. I wouldn't wonder at all. I was hosted by Britt and Jacob who have a house in Paradise, Las Vegas. Suitable name for a suburb. On the way there I stopped at a Kawasaki dealer to get some oil and oil filter. Too bad I only saw The Strip in daylight.

I started my Wednesday by taking a little ride in Lake Mead national park and Hoover Dam. That is an enormous structure. Naturally I didn't take any guided tours as I have to save money. I just took photos. In the afternoon I changed the oil for the bike.

For Thursday I had a long way to go. From Las Vegas to Grand Canyon and from there to a town called Page. Altogether about 650 km. On the way I saw some beautiful places but they were nothing compared to Grand Canyon. It's beyond imagination. If I understood correctly the canyon is more than 1800 meters deep and about 450 km long. On the widest point it's about 29 km wide. It's bigger than I ever could imagine. I stopped at the visitor center and at couple of lookouts. There is no way to get the greatness of canyon captured in photos. Hopefully these give you some impression.

Most of the way to Page was just normal highway ride. At one point the road crossed some mountain range and setting sun gave a beautiful view.

Morning in Page was freezing. My phone told the temperature was  about +5 Celsius but some rivelets were frozen so the real temperature must have been around zero. Fortunately the sun warmed my black riding jacket every time I stopped. And I had to do that very often. As I was way too stupid and sent my jacket's thermal liner back to Finland with Annie I had to figure out new ways to keep warm. I ended up using my new trousers' thermal liner under my jacket. And it worked quite well.

I rode all the way to Monument Valley. Absolutely one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Photos cannot do justice to the place.

I reached Flagstaff at around 4pm so I had finally time to go and buy myself a new mattress to replace the one that didn't survive the crash in Australia. Hopefully this one is better than the old one.
