Day 8 - Omsk - Novosibirsk
24093 - 24744 651 km
This was maybe one the best mornings during this trip. Not because I slept well - because I didn't but because I got a continental breakfast. At least almost. I really missed bacon (not Kevin Bacon). But there were excellent hot sandwiches and pancakes and sausages. I ate so much I thought Annie (I just named my bike Annie today) couldn't handle my weight anymore.
Only thing different compared to Finnish hotel breakfast is that there's only a plateful of everything whether in Finland there's plenty on everything.
Nice place. Probably built for sport educational purposes during the time of Soviet Union. There were a lot of photos of athletes. Probably famous ones. Only one I think I recognized was Aleksadr "Siberian Bear" Karelin.
I thought my trip from Omsk to Novosibirsk would have been at least as boring as from Tyumen to Omsk. Far from that! About 100 km east of Omsk two Russian bikers passed me and we started to ride together. And that is what I call some serious riding. It would have been easy with a street bike but with Annie it was extremely hard. But the adrenaline rush certainly kept me warm. For the next 40-50 km we went in line with a speed varying from 110 km/h to 150 km/h. Then two us us had to stop to take some gasoline and we had a good laugh. Too bad the internet was so slow and Google Translator didn't work. It would have been nice to chat with the guys. I gave them my card and asked them to send me e-mail.
After filling up I let the guys go. I couldn't beat more out of Annie. I'm sure the engine is now clean from the inside. At least fuel consumption skyrocketed from normal 5,5 l/100 km to 6,9 l/100 km. And that was the average consumption of the last 220 km. How much did the old lady drink during the last 50 km?
After couple of dozen kilometers one of the guys seemed to have a nice conversation with a police. I wonder if it was an expensive conversation. In Finland that kind of speeding would have meant loosing your driving license and a huge fine. At least it seems he didn't lose his license because after a while they passed me again with that same insane speed.
For the rest of my more than 600 km trip today I took very easily. I drove at a speed of about 100 km/h to save fuel and the engine. It seems Annie has started to lose some oil. I know the rear valve cover is leaking a bit but it shouldn't cause that oil consumption. I try to get the oils changed tomorrow in Barnaul. The ones in the engine are mineral based. Maybe synthetic works better?
At around 4:30 PM I arrived to Novosibirsk. This seems to be quit a big city too. I had looked a hotel beforehand from Google maps and after riding a while in a rush I found it. But... They don't have a safe park for the bike. Let the hotel search begin again...
Google maps told me there's Hotel Siti (City) only 1,4 km away. I thought I could give it a shot. And it definitely was worth that!
Hotel Siti doesn't look so fancy or glamorous outside, but from the inside it's very cozy and nice. They have safe park on the backyard which is being renovated at the time being. Both of the nice girls at the reception speak English. Tatjana speaks it fluently and Nika (hope I spelled the name right) is just shy and tries too much to make her English sound perfect. According to my experience only a few speak English perfectly - at least I don't even though I was once told I'm British. But that's another story - and the one who said it was French-Canadien i.e. she doesn't speak anything well...
I took a little video of my room. I'm glad it is way took big to be uploaded here. I hate listening my own voice - it sounds so weird. So you have to settle for some photos.
Here is one from the hotel. It seems I'm the first quest in this room for a while. Hygienity Confirmation was dated 27th August 2017
And this is a panorama of the room
I realized I haven't taken any photos on the road. Of course not while driving. I stopped for these. I just wanted show you the huge amount of nothingness that surrounded me several times today. Usually those moments are still very short as the truck traffic is enormous on this Siberian Highway.
Tomorrow morning I will start very early towards Barnaul. I have to get the service done to the bike. I'm planning to have a day off the bike on Saturday. My ass is killing me after these miles!
