Day 3 - Vologda - Kotelnich
21321 - 22101 780km
This was not a nice day. First of all my beloved navigator wanted to guide me north instead of south. When I finally got to the right direction from Vologda after driving several times back and forth the main road the navigator decided to take a shortcut. Or at least I think it did because I faced a lot of unpaved roads. Gravel, soft sand etc. With some help from a stranger at the gas station (after I had run Honda to spare tank) I finally got to the right direction towards Kotelnich.
The weather was nice during the day. Even the sun was shining for a while. Too bad it was impossible to enjoy the sun as the road conditions were absolutely horrible. When I finally got of the short cut I faced newly paved asphalt almost 150km in the end. Too bad it started to rain at that time. And it rained hard! It seems my rain trousers are leaking.
Russia is definitely a land of huge controversies. At least on the road. The trucks can be old soviet versions or brand new Volvos. The roads can be perfectly smooth asphalt or gravel with huge rocks or mud and soft sand. And all this in only a few kilometers. The road conditions change in a split second. At one point I just saw the pavement ending when there was a huge hole in the road. Luckily I didn't fall even though I hit straight to the bottom - and up. The controversies continue also on the buildings. New supermarket vs a block house from the time of Soviet Union.
On thing that is weird for a Finn is that practically nobody speaks English. In Finland most people can even understand some English and all the people under 50 have studied it at school. Here they don't study it and all the movies are dubbed. I'm so happy that we have a Google Translator.
The photos show how dirty my helmet was in the morning. And how dirty the bike was in the afternoon.
At one point I had to wait for a train for about 10 minutes. It was just standing there a couple of hundred meters away. People were smoking and chatting. Nobody seemed angry or frustrated.
